Email

Medium

Email (electronic mail) is a means of transmitting computer-based messages over a network, typically the Internet. Today's email programs are often bundled with other tools designed to improve collaboration, such as calendars, contact lists, and task lists.

NDIT provides email service to a majority of the state government and many local government entities. There are approximately 12800 user mailboxes currently hosted in NDIT’s email environments.

Email Environments

Exchange Online

Most of the mailboxes in the State environment are hosted within Exchange Online, which is part of the Microsoft 365 and Office 365 suite of products.  NDIT offers Office 365 packages that include Exchange Online for both State employees and non-State users.

  1. Office 365 Basics (State Employees)

  • Includes Exchange Online, Teams, Sharepoint Online, OneDrive & Office Web Applications

2. Office 365 Basic (Non-State Users)

  • Includes Exchange Online, Teams, Sharepoint Online, OneDrive & Office Web Applications
  • $13.25/month

3. Office 365 Pro (Non-State Users)

Exchange On-premises

NDIT currently maintains an On-premises Exchange environment, but we are in the process of moving the few remaining mailboxes in that environment to Exchange Online.

  Pioneer

NDIT used to offer non-State users a free IMAP/POP-based email service.  This service has been moved to Exchange Online.  As of January 1, 2023, Pioneer will no longer be offered as a free service.  At that time, all non-State users will be required to purchase the Office 365 Basic package, at a minimum, for continued access to email services.

Email Encryption

Email is inherently unsecured; therefore, NDIT provides email encryption for agencies that use email to exchange sensitive and/or confidential information via Microsoft Office 365 Message Encryption.  OME is included as part of NDIT’s Office 365 packages.  Encryption can be set on an email in Outlook by clicking the Encrypt button in the Options menu of the email.  Encrypt-Only is the recommended encryption option for most cases.  Agencies can also request the creation of rules that will encrypt email based on subject keywords or other criteria.
